Beatnik is a software-based, high-performance music and audio playback technology created by Headspace, Inc. .At the core of Beatnik is the Headspace Audio Engine which is a multi-platform, real-time 64-voice software synthesizer that is fully General MIDI-compatible and also features custom downloadable samples and advanced digital audio processing effects. Headspace has also created its own audio file format to take full advantage of the unique features of the Headspace Audio Engine: Rich Music Format, or RMF.

The Beatnik Xtra for Director (Windows and Macintosh) is a Director plug-in which, similar to the Beatnik Player for web browsers, allows for the integration of Beatnik and Rich Music Format into Director 6 & 7. Director authors can easily access Beatnik and RMF directly from Lingo, and can integrate the power of the Headspace Audio Engine into their self-contained Projectors, Shockwave movies, and projects.
The Beatnik Player for Windows and Macintosh is the plug-in for popular web browsers that allows for the integration and playback/performance of Rich Music Format (RMF) files on web pages. The Beatnik Player for Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer is available for free from the Headspace web site at: http://www.headspace.com/to/?player. The Beatnik Player also supports the playback of other standard audio formats such as MIDI,.WAV, AIFF, .AU, and .MOD.
